National study of shrinking cities.

In 2021, the Ministry of Economy funded a study by SPIN Unit and TalTech on Estonia's shrinking cities. The study aimed to pinpoint shrinking patterns and identify the most vulnerable areas and building types across the nation.

Our team innovated mapping shrinkage by analyzing diverse data sets—energy usage, occupancy, census figures, economic indicators, and building details for every building in country. This comprehensive approach allowed us to highlight specific regions, cities, districts, and buildings at high risk of shrinkage, providing policymakers with critical insights for targeted intervention and strategic planning.
